En 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023 y 2025, viajamos a la República Dominicana. En cada programa los estudiantes se quedaban con familias anfitrionas, participaban en muchas diferentes actividades en la comunidad, visitaban una escuela local, iban a la playa, y los estudiantes formaban amistades y lazos que nunca olvidarán. Este programa es ideal para un estudiante que quiere conocer otra cultura y estilo de vida, usar su español todos los días (¡24 horas por día!), aprender más español, y probar nuevas cosas con la mente abierta y positiva. In 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023 and 2025, we traveled to the Dominican Republic. In each program the students stayed with host families, participated in many different community activities, visited a local school, went to the beach, and formed friendships and bonds that they will never forget. This program is ideal for a student who wants to learn about another culture and lifestyle, use their Spanish everyday (24 hours a day!), learn more Spanish, and try new things with a positive attitude and open mind.

¡La República Dominicana – 2027! Currently planning a program for Stoughton High School: June 2027
In June 2023, a group of 20 Northwood students traveled to La Cumbre, an idyllic community in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. This was a fully immersive experience- students lived with host families, and by the end of 10 days, many of us created bonds that will last a lifetime.
We wanted to be able to give back to the community that gave us so much- their homes, food, water, and most importantly, their warm welcomes and love.
We held a fundraiser and collected $5,800 that will provide the entire community with easy access to running water. Thank you so much to everyone who graciously donated!
Las Familias Anfitrionas – Host Families
Los estudiantes siempre se quedan son familias anfitrionas, y esto es uno de los componentes más importantes de la experiencia. Los estudiantes viven la vida dominicana todos los días durante su estadía con la familia dominicana. The students always stay with host families, and this is one of the most important components of the experience. The students live the Dominican life everyday during their stay with the host family.
Una escuela dominicana – A Dominican School
Visitamos una escuela dominicana, donde hacemos diferentes actividad con los estudiantes. A veces pintamos, hacemos robots de legos, bailamos, comemos, jugamos deportes, ¡y mucho más! We visit a Dominican school, where we do different activities with the students. Sometimes we paint, create Lego robots, eat, play games or sports, and much more!
La Cumbre
Durante todos los días de nuestra estadía, los estudiantes se quedan en la comunidad de La Cumbre, donde tienen muchas oportunidades para formar amistades, interactuar con los miembros de la comunidad, y hablar en español. During all days of our stay, the students stay in the community of La Cumbre, where they have many opportunities to form friendships, interact with members of the community, and speak in Spanish.
¡Bailando! Dancing!
Siempre bailamos, ¡cada cada noche! La música es merengue y bachata. Nadie baila mejor que los dominicanos… We always dance, every night! The music is merengue and bachata. Nobody dances better than the Dominicans…
¡Jugando dominó!

Los dominicanos juegan el dominó con pasión. Nosotros jugamos con ellos, casi todos los días. The Dominicans play dominoes with passion. We play with them, almost everyday.
¡La playa! The beach!
Siendo una isla (o parte de una isla), no podemos visitar la República Dominicana sin visitar la playa por un día. Being an island (or part of an island), we cannot visit the Dominican Republic without visiting the beach for a day.
Cocinando – Cooking
Los estudiantes siempre tienen la oportunidad de cocinar, y así aprenden a hacer algunas comidas dominicanas. The students always have the opportunity to cook, and that’s how they learn to make some traditional Dominican foods.
La comida –The food
Arroz y frijoles…casi siempre. Tostones…tan deliciosos. Pescado en la playa. El pollo es siempre popular. Y hay muchas frutas, ¡especialmente mangos! Rice and beans…almost always. Tostones [fried plantains]…so delicious. Fish at the beach. Chicken is always popular. There are many fruits, especially mangos!

Siempre hacemos chocolate con cacao cultivado en La Cumbre. El producto final es delicioso y 100% natural. We always make chocolate with cacao grown in La Cumbre. The final product is delicious and 100% natural.

Siempre tenemos la oportunidad de cosechar algunos productos y aprender sobre lo que se cultiva en esta región de la República Dominicana. We always have the opportunity to harvest some products and learn about what is grown in this region of the Dominican Republic.
